COVID 19 Update
January & February 2020 Farm to School
January's Try Day for a locally grown veggie offers collard greens - simmered and seasoned! We are also ordering Virginia Grown apples and sweet potatoes.
In February, we will serve our amazing Homemade Zucchini Bread, made with fresh, locally grown zucchini that we purchased in the summer at the peak of harvest, froze, and saved to delight our staff and students in the winter, when local items have more limited availability. Everyone loves our zucchini bread!

We are proud to have farm to school promoting language in our WJCC Student Wellness Policy & Regulations. Here are excerpts:
VIII.B. Good nutrition is promoted by creating healthy opportunities. Nutrition promotion in WJCC schools may occur through opportunities such as role modeling by adult staff; mentoring by older students; SHIP’s Challenge Clubs, Wellness Integration Program and Child Nutrition Services Partnership; cafeteria messaging and promotion programs; healthy fundraisers; farm to school and school garden initiatives, staff wellness programs, and other initiatives.
XI. Farm to School
A. WJCC Schools and Child Nutrition Services support farm to school initiatives that help students eat more nutritious food; promote healthier lifelong eating patterns; and support local farmers and growers.
B. WJCC Schools support school gardens as laboratories to teach students about the plant and animal life cycle and food systems; empower students and families to grow their own food; practice a strong work ethic; develop an appreciation for sustainable agricultural practices; and create health opportunities.
C. School garden curriculum will be linked to SOLs and based on evidence based strategies to teach life skills, health and agricultural literacy, and STEM subjects.
D. Local and regional foods are defined with a tier system with tier 1 being grown or produced within Williamsburg-James City County; tier 2 being Virginia Grown, and tier 3 being within a 200-mile radius of WJCC Central Office.
